Affectionately known to the British public simply as “Our George”, George Formby combined cheeky songs, a toothy grin and his signature ukulele to become one of the last century’s most beloved comedians. His remarkably long career lasted from the end of the Music Hall era to the early days of television, definitely reaching its peak during World War II, when he rose to international fame as the cheerful face of indefatigable resilience in the face of the enemy. Yet behind the carefree facade lurked a darker story… which he eventually overcame.
Now, up-and-coming young singer/dancer/actor Marcel Cole brings Formby’s story vividly to life in his award-winning homage to the comic and the vanished world of popular entertainment in which he was a central figure. With disarming charm, musical accomplishment and an effortless command of Formby’s distinctive persona, Cole has been delighting audiences all over Australia, and now he is visiting our region, under the auspices of Arts Northwest On Tour. Cole’s mastery of the ukulele and banjolele, his natural comic timing and his engaging audience rapport have won him rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. He is joined on stage by his real-life mother Katie Cole, who plays several supporting characters – as well as a few musical instruments!
This charming hour-long show is perfect for anyone looking for a jolly good night of music and laughter.
