Lambis Englezos is renowned for his instrumental role in locating the ‘Lost Diggers of Fromelles’ – a discovery that has brought closure to hundreds of families and proper recognition to fallen Australian soldiers. His perseverance led to the groundbreaking archaeological excavation that identified 250 soldiers’ remains, culminating in the opening of Pheasant Wood Cemetery in 2010. In recognition of his tireless efforts, a street in Fromelles was named after Lambis in August 2025.
The Battle of Fromelles on July 19, 1916, marked a devastating introduction to Western Front warfare for the 5th Australian Division, with over 5,500 Australian casualties. For decades, the soldiers killed in this battle remained in unmarked mass burial pits until Lambis’s theory and determination led to their recovery and proper burial at Pheasant Wood Cemetery.
