This plein air workshop is a hands-on art class where participants paint outdoors – at the Tamworth Bicentennial Park, taking inspiration directly from nature. Michelle will provides an overview of her practice, en plein air painting techniques, and what to look for in the landscape to create a sense of place.
Participants learn about the essential tools, paints, and easels required for en plein air painting. Michelle will demonstrate how to create an outdoor painting set-up and make the most of climatic conditions, followed by sketching before painting techniques and demonstrations
The term “en plein air” is French for “in the open air,” and this practice is favored for its ability to capture the natural light, colors, and atmosphere of a scene.

Esther Halliday Studio, Tamworth Regional Gallery
The second part of the workshop is held in the studio. Michelle will assist artists to use their observations form nature into more complete artworks in the Esther Halliday Studio. Michelle will share her techniques to capture colours, textures, and lighting of the Australian landscape and provides one-on-one guidance, addressing specific challenges and helping participants refine their artistic styles.
