Tamworth Regional Playground

Tamworth Marsupial Park and Adventure Playground

Animal lovers will Tamworth’s Marsupial Park where you can get up close with kangaroos, wallabies, cockatoos, emus and peacocks in the 14-hectare park before exploring the Adventure Playground. With thoughtfully designed play areas for under 5s and over 5s, plus BBQ and bathroom facilities on-site, it’s the perfect spot to pass a few hours. The best part? It’s all totally free!

Tamworth Mountain Bike Park

Get ready for an outdoor adventure for the whole family! The Tamworth Mountain Bike Park is home to a variety of tracks, from beginner through to advanced. It includes 14 kilometres of International MTB Association guideline-graded trails, a Pump Track, a Skills Park, five kilometres of Adaptive Cycling Trails plus a Cultural Walking Trail if bikes aren’t for you. Along with a picnic area, playground and plenty of car parking space for large vehicles and trailers, it’s a great day out for mountain bikers and those travelling with them.

Tamworth Regional Skate Park

The state-of-the-art Tamworth Skate Park is guaranteed to be a hit with skaters, bikers and scooter rollers of all ages and abilities with a massive bowl and pump track adjacent to a half-court basketball court and great playground for the kids – all right in the middle of Tamworth. By day, it’s a great spot to take a travel break, with long vehicle parking across the road, public toilets and The Deck Skate Park café serving up food and drinks. Come evening, the serious players come out under lights to experience why this regional skate park has been called “one of the best in NSW”.     

Tamworth Miniature Railway

Choo choo choo, have we got a great spot for you… and the kids!

If you’re travelling with someone who has a soft spot for trains, make sure you head up to Tamworth’s Victoria Park on the third Sunday of each month to experience the Tamworth Miniature Railway.   For just $3, you can ride the 1km loop which includes two 600-metre dual-gauge tracks, two tunnels and an 18-metre Worls War II vintage Bailey bridge. Jump on the Oxley Loop for great views across East Tamworth and out to Tamworth Regional Airport. Just make sure you’re wearing enclosed footwear to avoid disappointment when it’s time to board. Top the experience off by bringing along supplies for a picnic lunch at the Picnic Pavilion, where you’ll find undercover tables with barbeque facilities.

Tamworth Kootingal Horse Riding Adventures

Give your family an authentic country experience that’ll stay with them long after you’ve left town. Tamworth Kootingal Horse Riding Adventures is located on a working farm called “Swamp Oak Station”, about half an hour out of Tamworth itself. Real-life cowboy, Jason (a former National Rodeo Council of Australia World Saddle Bronc Riding Champion) and cowgirl, Christine (an Australian Barrel Racing and All-Round Cowgirl Champion) offer pony rides or two-hour trail rides for all abilities, as well as Station Tours of the 1,400-acre property in a six-seater Can-Am buggy.

Be it a new release blockbuster, quirky rom com or an animated adventure, you simply can’t beat seeing a movie on the big screen. Take the family to Forum 6 Cinemas in the heart of Tamworth for state-of-the-art theatres, the latest flicks and of course, the candy bar of your dreams. They even have dedicated sessions for parents-and-toddlers and those with sensory needs.  

Tamworth Regional Astronomy Centre

Arguably, one of the best parts of regional travel is a clear view of the night sky. In Tamworth, you can take a closer look at the Tamworth Regional Astronomy Centre, which houses three observatories and is home to some of the largest privately-owned telescopes in Australia. The domed observatory doubles as a planetarium theatre for simulated night sky views and amazing audio-visual experiences, plus you’ll find displays of meteorites, minerals, megafauna, astronomical images and lots more. If you have a little science whizz or future astronaut travelling with you, put this one at the top of the to-do list.

Viewing Nights at the Astronomy Centre is on Thursdays 6pm - 11pm, and the first Saturday of the month 6pm - 9:45pm. They are also open Saturdays 10am - 1pm.

Tamworth Powerstation Museum

We mean it when we say you won’t find an experience like this anywhere else – Tamworth’s Powerstation Museum is Australia’s only dedicated electrical museum. Built on the site where steam engines powered Australia’s first municipal electric street lighting in 1888, it celebrates Tamworth’s important place in national history as the First City of Light and explores the history of electrical innovation. You’ll also find two John Fowler steam driven engines (replicas of what powered the original street lighting system); the only two of their type operating in the world! With hands-on displays and friendly volunteer guides ready to show you around, you’ll leave with a whole new appreciation for the role electricity plays in our lives.
