Tertiary Education

 University Department of Rural Health

The University Department of Rural Health Northern New South Wales (UDRH) was established in Tamworth in 2001 delivering University of Newcastle medical qualifications to students.

In 2003, UDRH undergraduate students were the first Australian medical students to complete all of their clinical training in the rural sector.

From July 2006, UDRH entered the next phase of its development with the establishment of the Rural Clinical School (RCS). The provision of additional funding to achieve this is an acknowledgement of the work that has been done to date in developing a comprehensive range of undergraduate medical opportunities.

Research indicates that students who train in a community are more likely to remain within that community.  The location of UDRH right here in Tamworth is already delivering these results.  UDRH has been instrumental in creating an environment where the number of medical staff and associated services in the Tamworth region is now growing rapidly.

UNE centre

Hundreds of the University of New England’s internal and external students use the Tamworth access centre on a regular basis.  Access Centre Operations Manager Frances Kelly said the centre played a significant part in Tamworth’s economy and future. It gives the opportunity for students to study in their own town.

Research shows that some students say they wouldn’t have stuck to their degree if it wasn’t for the centre.  They receive great support that keeps them going with their degrees.

The centre also has internet conferencing so students can join in on tutorials. The centre has three computer labs, printers, study rooms, and video conferencing.

TAFE - New England Institute

The New England Institute of TAFE plays a vital role in the region’s educational needs, offering courses to those still at high school and those who have completed their schooling.

The Tamworth Campus is helping high school students get a headstart on their future career paths.

School students are now able to begin post-school qualifications before they finish high school and can complete up to certificate two of their apprenticeship before they leave school.

In addition to offering certificates of attainment and courses up to diploma level, TAFE is also a major training provider for apprentices and trades people.
