Education
The Tamworth region is committed to ensuring that its children and young people have access to a diverse and high level, quality range of educational, cultural and recreational opportunities.
Education in Tamworth has always been an important aspect of community life since the first school teacher arrived in 1847. Today, the Tamworth region provides a range of quality, contemporary educational options for parents of children and young people.
The choices begin at pre-school level, and cater for babies to school age children, in modern and well equipped centres. A range of approaches are available and includes Montessori, preparatory classes within a K-12 structure, long day, and traditional pre-schools. Early intervention classes are also available for pre-school children with special needs.
At the primary and secondary school level, the region offers a range of large and small government schools located across the region. Three Catholic schools, two Christian schools and an Anglican school also provide parents with non-government school options. For students with specific needs, both support and opportunity classes operate at the region’s government schools.
The region’s post school options include the Northern NSW University Department of Rural Health, the New England Institute of TAFE, the University of New England’s Access Centre and Tamworth Community College and a host of registered training organisations offering industry specific and tailored training and development opportunties.
Privately run tutoring companies and individuals are readily available to provide extra tuition to students of all ages who require support with their studies.
In addition to educational opportunities, the Tamworth region provides an extensive range of recreational pursuits for children, young people and adults.
The Tamworth Regional Conservatorium of Music caters for all ages from pre-schoolers upwards, and it offers a wide range of musical opportunities to the regions’ inhabitants.
An abundance of dance schools, speech and drama schools, private instrumental tutors, together with local musical and dramatic societies, bands and orchestras, ensure that cultural opportunities are plentiful. The annual Country Music College held in January and Camerata, held in July, cater for those interested in pursuing a career in the country music industry.
Tamworth boasts some of the best sporting facilities in the state and the region is proud of the many top level sportsmen and women it has produced. Indeed there is a plethora of sporting opportunities in the Tamworth region.
NIAS the Northern Inland Academy of Sport – an organisation that is well supported by the business community of Tamworth, ensures that training, guidance and competitive opportunities are available for many of the region’s elite young athletes.
The region’s waterways provide excellent opportunities for sailing, fishing, water skiing and boating, whilst for those interested in a variety of aerial pursuits, Manilla regularly hosts para and hang-gliding championships, and Lake Keepit offers instructions for gliding.
